  7. IconDOS is a graphical application launcher for DOS that is similiar to
  8. Window's Program Manager, complete with icons and wallpaper.  IconDOS is
  9. practical and efficient.  Zero (0) resident memory is required so
  10. launched applications are guaranteed to work the same as if run directly
  11. from DOS.  Multi-page icon menus and sub-menus provide virtually
  12. unlimited menu size.  Other features include a built-in clock,
  13. calculator, calendar, screen saver, over 450 (registered version)
  14. pre-drawn icons, 36 different wallpapers and a graphical editor for
  15. producing custom icons and wallpaper.  VGA graphics is required.  A
  16. mouse is required for menu setup and editing.  After setup, IconDOS
  17. operates equally well using either keyboard or mouse.

  21. You really should read the documentation first you know.  If human
  22. nature gets the better of you, type "ICONDOS DEMO".  Try selecting an
  23. icon or two.  Press F1 for a utility menu.

  25. DOCUMENTATION
  26.  
  27. The included documentation, ICONDOS.DOC and ICONEDIT.DOC, are ASCII file
  28. "books" designed to be read using the included hypertext style file
  29. browser, BOOK.EXE.   To read the documentation type:
  30.  
  31.               BOOK ICONDOS.DOC ...and... BOOK ICONEDIT.DOC

  33. When reading a documentation book:
  34.  
  35. - Use Pg-Up and Pg-Dn keys to move through the document.
  36.  
  37. - Type a page number and press ENTER to jump to a specific page.  Press
  38.   ENTER alone to return to the previous page.
  39.  
  40. - Use Home and End keys to move to the start/end of the document.
  41.  
  42. - Press "A" to align the page boundaries with the screen after scrolling
  43.   with the arrow keys.

  46. VIEWING ICON LIBRARIES
  47.  
  48. To view the icon library, simply start IconDOS and specify the library
  49. as the menu file like this:

  53. The icons will be displayed for easy viewing on successive pages.

  56. FILE LIST
  57.  
  58. ICONDOS.*   - Main menu program and documentation
  59. ICONEDIT.*  - Icon editor and documentation.
  60. PCX2ICN.*   - Icon screen capture utility and documentation
  61. ICONNUM.EXE - Utility which sequentially numbers the icons in a file by
  62.               overwriting icon titles with numbers.  Useful for icon
  63.               library maintenance.
  64. BOOK.EXE    - Hypertext style file browser for reading ICONDOS.DOC and
  65.               ICONEDIT.DOC.
  66. INSTALL.BAT - Simple batch file to setup a directory on your hard disk
  67.               and copy the necessary IconDOS files to it.
  68. *.MNU       - Example menu files.
  69. RUN.BAT     - Batch file which works with the example menus.  Use this
  70.               file as an example for setting up menus to run your
  71.               applications.
  72. ICON.LBR    - Icon library.  See ICONEDIT.DOC for instructions on
  73.               copying icons from this library to a menu file.
  74. PAPER.ICN   - Wallpaper file.  Contain 36 wallpapers. IconDOS selects a
  75.               wallpaper at random from those available in this file at
  76.               startup unless wallpaper has been fixed (see below).

  81. Version 1.5 now provides more wallpaper, a new pulldown menu and new
  82. integrated calendar and calculator.
  83.  
  84. Microsoft's expanded memory manager provided with DOS 5, EMM386.EXE,
  85. will significantly degrade video display performance with IconDOS and
  86. any other video intensive applications.  When added to your CONFIG.SYS
  87. setup, this driver runs your Intel 386 processor in an obscure 'virtual'
  88. mode which results in the loss of display speed.
